Nio launches battery leasing service for EVs
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NIO has launched a battery leasing service with CATL, a prominent battery manufacturer, based on its innovative battery swap system. Whilst other car firms have previously offered battery leasing schemes, all have dropped it. The key difference with NIO’s scheme is that NIO enables customers to choose from small or larger battery packs at differing prices, based on their current needs. What’s more, the Chinese government is also pushing Battery as a Service and related battery swap schemes to boost the EV market.

Since NIO designs and builds cars around battery packs and offers multiple models (three) that use the same battery packs, it has a distinct advantage over Better Place's battery swap model that failed. Plus, NIO can simply increase the number of battery swap stations in areas where it sells more cars. Its battery swap stations aren't permanent structures and can be moved and relocated as demand increases or wanes.
